I think that the 103 was a decent beginner horn when it was made. If I remember correctly, this is the front action version of the small 3 valve Yamaha, that was replaced with the 104 and then 105 top action horns. The intonation wasn't too bad and they had a decent sound for a small horn. Unfortunately, since most of them were bought for beginners to learn on, most of the ones I have seen recently are pretty beat up and that makes them pretty bad to play on.

The early Jupiters were worse, as are most of the Chinese tubas that you see today, such as Lark, Parrot, or Jingbao.
