. . no, the real winner is Shostakovich, and that wasn't the question. While I agree with every single point that you made (I don't, however, buy orchestral recordings to listen to Herseth), I personally prefere the Masur/N.Y.P.O. one because I like Masur's more traditional, "centralized interpretation" tempi, that's all. I don't think that the N.Y.P.O. brass section is all that far behind the CSO's either. Apples and oranges. Bottom line: can't go wrong with either.
