Edvard Grieg wrote a "Sørgemarsch" for his one year older composer friend, Rikard Nordraak (1842-1866). Rikard Nordraak was the one who pointed Edvard Grieg’s attention towards the richness of inspiration to be found in the Norwegian folk music.

I might have heard this march, but it is not coming up on my inner HiFi. An incipit, or even better a writing of the full main theme, might help me out.

The term "Funeral March" is not an exact translation of the original titel of "Sørgemarsch". The German term "Trauermarsch" is a closer interpretation. "Sørgemarsch" basically means a march of grief, sorrow, and commemoration. Which does not exclude its use at funerals, but which points to a somewhat wider usage of the music.
