I'm looking at a xerox of what seems to be the the actual part for the 7th, and it does alternate with each movement - 1 & 3 are bass, 2 & 4 are contrabass.
Question still holds - does anyone play it as indicated, or is it traditionally done on a contrabass for the entire work?
The 4th symphony looks like it would work really well on a big F or Eb.
