Perhaps a great part of the skill of the fine tuba player is the capability of compensating for the deficiencies of a horn. That made you not hear differences while Scott could tell what he had to do differently to achieve his standard quality tone. Maybe the rest of us need to ask, "Which was easier to play?" "Which took the least correction effort?" Or we need to use beginners without those capabilities to do the play testing to show up the rough tendencies of the horn under test. I know that's true of stringed instruments like violins and basses, even bows.
