As I understand it, your marching season is a short one, but a rough one. Basically having the sousa players doing their tech practise work on their proper tubas. Leaving the "causes-of-death-of-the-sousa" (the 20K in this case) to be located almost anywhere but in the relatively well guarded valve cluster.

The right guys to ask would be the pro-dix-sousaphonistes. And hopefully they will not fall back on a saying, that I heard a bit too often in the Dano-American jazz environment I once had some contact to: "It’s "goodenough" for jazz! (Did Mussorgskij actually write a jazz opera with Boris as the crooner?).
