I think there is a difference in sound between annealed and work-hardened brass. There certainly is when steel's involved.

Here's an experiment to try with your Cool Edit setup:

Get a couple of feet of 3/4" seamless drawn brass tubing (it's plenty hardened right off the rack). Suspend it and strike it like a wind chime bar, recording the spectrum. Then anneal it and repeat the experiment. I suspect there will be a significant difference.

Heck, I may do the experiment myself...
