Good post, Rick, but I question your use of "amplify".

A tuba amplifies nothing--if viewed in the light of pure acoustical energy, it actually attenuates some of the energy put into it by converting it to heat. It may resonate; in fact, one hopes it does. But unless there is another external energy input into the horn, it does not amplify; i.e. increase the power level of the input signal.

In fact, I think we'd get a lot further if we quit taking about things like stuffiness and airflow and acknowledged the horn for what it is--a resonator. The conical shape adds certain complex characteristics to the resonance, but airflow has nothing to do with it. And "stuffiness" is nothing more than a lack of resonance.
