I attended a masterclass this last school year with Aaron Jay Kernis, one of the most prominent young American composers around. He said that one thing that prevents a lot
of young composers from being able to make a living is that they never attain a high enough level on any one instrument to be able to gig on it. If you are talented as a euphonium player but see composition as your main calling, keep up your euph skills the best you can with the expectation that it may help you out someday. I am a tuba performance major, but I consider composition to be an equal part of my musical life, and the way I look at it, the more versatile you are, the better chance you have of being able to survive (make a living) as a musician. Good luck.
