Even in a top highschool band, a student, expecially a tuba, is given ample time to look through a piece to figure out fingerings while other instrumental sections are being assisted or even while the director is guiding one through a sight reading piece. Also, if one really sounds terrible, it's most likely not the fingerings.....but the practice factor and other variables in sounding good.
