I agree with you Rick. It would be great if kids would learn to love those parts. But I remember that a lot of arrangements at this level were never written with the tuba in mind. I think many times arrangers don't know what they're doing when it comes to the bass part and just give us longtones. To really develop at that level you need good music with a competent arranger.
