Thanks to everyone who responded to my post... and, since I'm currently PLAYING a sousaphone right now, I might have a slightly different angle on this. As long as the player in question does his best to play with a good sound (the band in question has ten tubas to 97 total members, right? Mine has seven to 144, and I don't have to blow my head off... I let the other guys do it;), he should be just find. Bear in mind though, that there is, I have found, a three or four month recoup time to regain all the finesse that one might lose in the all-encompassing quest for volume.
