This is good advice. You kind of have to find the happy medium....spend whatever time is needed to be competetive on tuba, and also broaden your horizons musically so that you can double on other bass instruments.
I don't think it's a problem going after your dream while you are young...what better time to do it? I went back to school and graduated with my BSEE at the age of 39. Thirteen years later, I have my house paid for, am in a senior position, and enjoy tremendously playing in a community orchestra. But I'm not at all sorry that I did the "music gig" in my 20's, even though I was poor as a church mouse.
