I know what you mean when you say boring parts. I've played many and am continuing to play them(isn't every tuba player?). My teacher always tells me to play as musically as possible. He tells me that I'm not trying to become a tuba player but a musician. I feel that this thought always helps me to realize how musically I am playing and fix some of the things that I need to do or not do. I must say that I love the two Holst military suites. I think they have great tuba parts. To keep myself busy and to not think about the boring points of playing, I started a brass quintet. It's a great use of time and talent for all brass players. Do what ever you have to do to keep it interesting for yourself!
