Have you ever listened with this in mind while out in front of the player? In such a question as this, I would never depend on my own hearing from the perspective of playing the instrument. The sound that we hear a foot or two from the bell, and physically coupled to the horn, is significantly different from the sound out front.
I'd bet that bell position has little effect on the external sound, as long as the listener is in the same position with respect to the bell.
