I agree with you, for the most part, however, a good teacher and/or band director will motivate their students to find good music in everything they play. Those long, boring parts are nothing more then long tones, and learning long tones is a fundamental part of every tuba player's training. You are right when you say they need to not limit themselves to this music either. I believe that they need to play "fun" music as well as this fundamental music or very few people would ever play tuba. The majority of students want to play musically and are willing to work to get it. The trick is finding a way to motivate these students to play they way they could be playing.
