Developing a bigger sound should not at all "ruin your face". In fact, it should have just the opposite effect. Playing with a big sound takes using a "big" amount of air. In what register do we exhaust the most amount of air?... the low register of course. Also, playing frequently in the low register (if you are doing it correctly) will force that jaw and throat to open up more. So, work a lot on slow, lyrical low register playing and your sound should open up. It would help if you had a good teacher to guide you along the way! Good luck!
