Use soap and water (to remove excess grease and dirt), then immerse the horn in acetic acid and water (stronger version of vinegar). Be sure to rinse the horn off well with plain water when finished. Use of a snake to scrub out the leadpipe is also very helpful. We have used that in our shop for years to remove lime and calcium deposits and it does not harm the finish of lacquered, unlacquered, silver, or gold plate.
