I agree. I have never liked the Yamaha sound (sorry Yamaha owners). They do sound stiff and bland. I have heard some great players play on Yamahas, and THEY sound good, but the Yamaha doesn't. Those great players would sound even better on something that sounds like a real tuba and not a synthesizer. Sorry if I offended some Yamaha owners, but those are my feelings from the first time I ever heard a Yamaha.
