I have had 2 tubas and a baritone shipped from the US to Ontario, Canada. Because of GST and PST (that's right, both taxes are collected by the same agency, even in Ontario), I found that USPS (United States Postal Service) was the best choice. UPS charged an additional $100 US for a customs brokerage fee. USPS didn't charge any extra.

I used to live in Detroit and made the drive to Toronto many times - it's about 4 - 5 hours, depending on how much you speed. The problem is the border - if you declare that you bought the tuba in the US, be prepared to pay 15% ( GST + PST)taxes on the US price. At least there is no customs or "duty" charges on tubas.

Good luck
