My sister played flute, and I didn't want to play a "girls" instrument. Brass was loud and would make her mad. Guess it worked out since she asked me to play a tuba solo at her wedding! As a side note, my middle school band director told my mom I wouldn't ever go anywhere in music, just to prove him wrong, my undergrad was in performance, and I'm heading to grad school on tuba as well. Wish I could remember his name...
