I just saw a Conn tuba/sousaphone brochure from 1934 that clearly showed a 34J with top action valves and a detachable recording bell. They also showed a 36J with 4 "long stroke" front action valves and a detachable recording bell. Models may have changed over the years, but this is what they were in 1934. The 25J wasn't listed in this catalog, but when they did sell it, it was as you described. The model numbers as I have have seen them are:

20J - 3 short stroke, top action valves, recording bell
21J - 3 short stroke, top action valves, upright bell
22J - 3 short stroke, side action valves, recording bell
24J - 4 short stroke, top action valves, recording bell
25J - 4 short stroke, top action valves, upright bell

34J - 4 long stroke, top action valves, recording bell
36J - 4 long stroke front action valves, recording bell

Can anyone fill in the holes in this list?
