Chuck,
There are several things you might consider in your quest for a better linkage.
You may be able to get new stop-arms to fit your rotors, allowing you to install any kinds of links (Sumiswald-style metal ball-ends, model-shop plastic ball ends, pop-off ball-ends, etc.) without damage to the original hardware. You could, also, rig some kind of adaptor to fit the existing stop-arms (threaded inserts to fit the old screw-holes, screws and nuts to fit in the slots of s-arm linkages (as suggested by Rick Denney), etc.).

Similarly, you could retain the original bar, uprights, and axle, making new arms and paddles to fit.
