Arnolds Jacobs often said in masterclasses and lessons that buzzing on the mouthpiece alone for too long can strain muscles in that it is different that actually playing the tuba. He goes into this in Song and Wind. One of the best new ideas is the BERP or to simply use a length of plastic tubing 6"--8" or 12" with the mouthpiece inserted to replicate the slight resistance of tuba.
