Boosey and Hawkes, who owned the patent on the Blaikley compensating system until the mid-seventies, was primarily into producing horns for British Brass Bands so their horns were pitched Bb, Eb and BBb as Klaus has stated. Other manufacturers were not allowed to produce compensating horns using this same system because of the patent laws. These other manufacturers who produce F and CC resorted to additional valves. Tradition then followed.
