I didn't read any of the explanations below. I'm quite sure that at least one (if not probably all of them) was clear, understandable, and concise.

My parenthetical comment would be that the compensating system "fixes" some problems that are best left "unfixed". In particular, it lowers the (Bb instrument) 1-2 fingered 5th partial B natural BELOW the desired pitch, whereas withOUT the compensating system, the B natural is almost perfectly in tune on most instruments.

Another "loss" is the almost perfectly in tune (NON-compensating Bb instrument) low D, which NON-compensating would be fingered 2-3-4.
