Work on centering pitches. Switching from a small to a big horn often leaves the player feeling the lack of resistance on the big horn. To compensate, he'll blow harder until he feels that same resistance. This leads to overblowing and out of center pitches which actually are softer despite all that extra work. Start at softer dynamics first and make sure that every note you play, in a scale for example, is exactly in center. Then practice increasing the volume gradually. As long as you maintain the centered quality of the sound, you'll get good projection which is what you're really after anyway.
