Personally, I started to see great improvements in my playing only after my teacher
started giving me music that was (at first) beyond my level. The first time this happened
was about a year ago when I started working on Richard Strauss' 1st horn concerto (an
octave down, of course). Those high E-flats sounded horrible at first, but eventually,
they became quite easy. As long as you keep musicality in mind, it is a good idea to challenge yourself.
