Sorry to disagree with a succesful player from the country where the modern euph had its roots until the expiration of patent restrictions made it possible for Hirsbrunner and especially Yamaha to let the development of the instrument take off.

The bore through the 3 first valves of the Imperials was exactly the same as is that of the present day Sovereigns. As are the corresponding bores of the 4th valves identical.

Model differences were in the leadpipe area and in the larger bows/bell areas.

The comparative tests between fingerings 1+3 and 4 do reveal nothing of the compensating status of any euph. The compensating loops on the backside of the piston cylinders do not come into action until the 4th valve is brought into action in combination with any of the other valves.

Considering that a compensating euph is well in tune with itself and that it is not mutilated by slide pullings according to a Dr. Young, then the ultimative test is between lowest space Ab’s played by fingerings 1 and 2+3+4. The latter might sound a bit brighter, but both Ab’s should have exactly the same pitch.
