"in tune" is relative. my sister-in-law sings opera in vienna and A there is not 440. (i think it's 442, way up from the 436 it used to be). this especially affects singers if they've learned to sing A as 440. but raising the pitch ever so slightly is an easy way to sound brighter so music directors sometimes do this. a cheap way to gratify your audience, it seems to me. marc
