When I switched to tuba in the '50's most tuba players came from the trumpet section. Eb tuba fingerings are the same in bass cleff as trumpet is in the treble cleff, so the switch was pretty easy.
Nowadays a lot of tuba players come from the euphonium section, so a 3/4 BBb makes more sense. At least that's what I've been told.
