Rick,
I think you, and the guys that have already responded, are all on the right track. There are three options I have enjoyed immensely over the years, to have a small ensemble horn that has a pleasing, full sound, but that doesn't kill the rest of the ensemble, volume-wise. 1) Rudolf-Meinl 3/4 CC- it is so agile it could be termed downright acrobatic! 2) Rudolf Meinl 5/4 6-valve F- pricey, but hard to beat, and 3) My old 4-valve Eb tuba, a customized Conn. On a couple of pieces in brass quintet that call for a very light, transparent texture, ie, "Girl with the Flaxen Hair", I have used my bass trombone. I hope you find the equipment that best suits you.
