The best tip ever given to me was to put the tuba in the case and then put a large bath towel in the bell and then put a half inflated basketball in the bell. Then pump up the basketball till it's very tight with a little hand pump to keep the bell away from the end of the case. The hand pump is small and packs easily in your suitcase. I've used that since college and it works great. Flew airlines on a tour in college and my tuba was the only one out of 5 that did not get damaged on the way back.
