Of course. You just have to realize that many of us like to fiddle with our equipment and invariably that produces stories that get recorded in this and other forums.

I bought my Yamaha F tuba new and played it dead stock for a long time, until Chuck Daellenbach showed me his ventilated valves at a master class. Ventilating the valves and replacing the original valve guides with better ones (per Yamaha's instructions) have been the only mods I've made on that horn.

I replaced the linkages on my Miraphone with better ball-and-socket linkages, but have made no other changes except repairs. This is a standard mod not needed on newer horns.

Lots of us buy old tubas, and these often need more work to make conveniently playable than new horns. But most of them are just fine without the mods, the mods just make them easier to manage.
