There have been several excellent answers to this question, but what it really comes down to is priorities. I have seen many young and not-so-young people with very expensive automobiles and other very expensive toys. How do they afford them? They have set their priorities, and for them, the $30K sports car, or boat is what is important to them and they find a way. For musicians, we have set our priorities with our instrument somewhere toward the top. I don't own a $15K tuba. I own a $3K St Pete. You see I have other priority items too. There's my woodshop and my guns. I also like to travel. I does help to have a decent paying job of course. There's an old saying, "The difference between a boy and a man is the price of his toys." Once the basic necessities are met, we find ways to pay for the toys.
