The lowest I every heard was the Canadian Brass tuba player's FFF on........I forgot the title. It's the opera that goes, "Fiiiiiiigaro. Fiiiiigaro firgaro....." Of course anything past pedal BBb or A is just a feeling.
Lowest written in orchestral music might be pedal Eb or D. I don't know since I'm only a college sophmore. In quintet, I've seen pedal B and BBb.
But if you see Joe S.'s response, he shows lack of interest in his last sentence. I thought that was cool cuz it's not something we all should concentrate and study on. Yeah, I start saying "oh crap" or doing the jazzer's "yeah, man" when they hit those pedals like butta. But instead of always "practicing" pedal tones, there's a WHOLE LOT more we should practice. I use pedal tones in my warm-ups and warm downs. And sometimes when I just goof off. :.P
