Actually Jay I was just thinking out loud. The B&S 52 comes as the standard "fill-in" mouthpiece with VMI tubas. I got one with my Mel Culbertson and the 3301's that we purchased at one of the HS I teach at all came with the 52. I really dislike the feel of it, but of course that is my own personal opinion. My teacher at the University of Kansas actually liked using it on his Willson Eb to round to tone out some more - like it really needed it.

The most productive purpose I have found for the B&S 52 is to give them to beginning euphonium players. I have them stick thier euph mp in the backbore of the tuba mp to do their lip vibration exercises with. I like how the tuba mp acts as a mini amplifier as to let the student hear if he is producing a charateristic lip vibration (if thats not an oxymoron) as opposed to a cheap imitation of a goose call with an unsupported air flow.
