Not having any previous experience with F tubas, I can not say with accuracy whether it was me or the horn. (or horns, I tried a few, including a MW 182, and an older Rudy )
I automatically blamed mysef: nevertheless, the sound was the same. No matter who was to blame, I'm the only one who can fix the quality of sound when I'm the guy holding the horn.
