Sometimes the equipment simply "sucks" (modern vernacular term used by musicians to describe an unusually poor performing instrument). While it is safe to say that the greats could make any instrument sound awesome, the amount of work required is more than what is preferred. F tubas (imho) are less forgiving than BBb's, and good ones are more rare than are bad ones.
