Walter Hartley, one of the leading low brass composers living today, wrote a nice duet for flute and tuba. If your piccolo companion would be willing to play flute, it would be a good choice for you. Otherwise, they could play it on piccolo and just deal with it being an octave higher than written. That might not be wise for solo & ensemble contest, however.

I played the Hartley in recital a few years ago with a great flute player, and it went over very well. It is musically solid, and doesn't just use the "little bitty horn vs. great big horn" gimmick to get a few chuckles. It should be playable by good High School age students who are (1) willing to expand their musical horizons a bit, and (2) put in the practice time ;-)
