You are correct - many aspiring college teachers do go to the CMS list for vacancies. It's another good resource for vacancies, and a fine publication.

I would say the employment focus of the individual in question dictactes which source they go to first. Those who would rather "perform first, then teach" join the AFM and receive/use IM for their job searches. Those who are more oriented towards teaching join the CMS and use their newsletter. Of course, both are useful if you want to pay dues to both organizations. $55 a year for CMS is a bit steep for someone who's primary interest is a playing gig. On the other hand, $95 a year is a waste of money for someone who wants to teach.

This is the stuff they DON'T tell you when you're getting a degree.
