Sometimes, no name horns didn't start out that way. Yamaha used to put their name and model number on some of their instruments with a decal, not engraving. Of course, the first time such an instrument gets overhauled (i.e., relacquered), the manufacturer's name goes bye-bye.

Some older eastern European horns would put the name on a medallion attached to the bell. Often the medallion gets lost.

Some horns were manufactured as "stencils", i.e., the horn was made at the factory with no name engraved and then sent to the marketer who would engrave whatever name was being used at the time. Occasionally, these horns got sold as liquidation items, with no name.

Lots of explanations are possible.
