The 983 seems to have lost its "flavor of the month" status, but I think it's a good quintet horn. It's a four valve compensating Eb, but with its pistons mounted out front. With mine, I'm even able to work my left hand through the horn, and play the fourth valve with my left hand first finger, just like on a 3 + 1 configuration horn. I only do that when I have to do a lot of rapid stuff in the low register. Mine has very good intonation, I feel. Personally speaking, I've always liked the sound of older, smaller Alex CC's in chamber brass settings. Listen to how Eric Sumner (is that his name?) sounds on his Alex on the Pittsburgh Symphony Brass recording of Bach's "Art of the Fugue". To me, that's the ideal sound. John Fletcher always sounded great in the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, using various Boosey & Hawkes 3 + 1 style eefers. Well, that's my worthless, non-professional two cents.
