i own a 1290(5) and i love it. i get so many huge compliments on the sound of the instrument. i use it in orchestra, band and 2nd tuba in 4tet, however, i do use make it work in 5tet as well. this particular horn has been re-wrapped by lee stofer which makes it play a little more open than usuall but the sound is VERY dark and as one tuba player who listened to me play said "that's how a tuba is supposed to sound". you can make this horn sound as big as a pt-6 in certain cases but also as small as mw2145. there are some pitch concerns but with a good ear and fast tuning slides, it shouldn't be a problem. e-mail me with any furthur questions.
