I think that large American band tubas are ideal for Dixie and early jazz type playing. They have the closest sound to a sousaphone of any tuba types I've used before, and they have the "Umph" needed to push the rhythm of the ensemble along. I find it really funny how much my Yorkbrunner and my ancient Eb sousaphone (60% brass, 39%duct tape, 1%silver plate) sound alike at low volume levels.

Maybe that's not a great reflection on my Yorkbrunner sound...
