I couldn't agree more with your comment. In the effort to fill up the large modern concert halls with sound a lot of character has gone missing from the sound of the modern orchestra in America and the UK. The Edwards trombones, as good and well built as they are, are a case in point. Why do I want such a uniform, large, dark sound with absolutely no variation in colour? Why do I want a darker sound than an already super-dark German instrument (Laetsch, Amrein, and all the older ones). No one is suggesting that we should all go back to pea-shooters like the pre-1930 French and British trombones, but a little bit of variation, please. Of course a dark large sound has to be the ideal for the tuba, but what's wrong with using an F tuba for a nineteenth century piece? (Franck?) What do you think and why? John
