Edwards have become the standard instrument for pro orchestra players in the US. Yes there are other players that play other good instruments as well. With a heavy guage bell, duo bore slide, and dual thayer valves it's a good example of the heavy metal free blowing instrument. Clear sound at all dynamics, best in loud playing. More options than you can make sense of, with single bore slides and thinner bells you can pick a horn that can pick up some edge for commercial work.
May not be the best horn for everyone. Not everyone likes Thayer valves. With duobore slide and a heavy bell my Edwards plays like a tank compared to a Bach. If you are not into large orchestra playing you might like the lighter weight and sound of Bach, Yamaha or Conn.
