Here an extensive, impressive, and informative website about Wagner's massive undertaking in transforming some of Goethe's work to the musical stage. A nice thing is that explanations do not become overly "scholarly".

As a separate issue, one might come to the conclusion that Tolkien's "Ring" cycle wasn't particularly original creativity.
