I'm usually sitting in the middle of the back row in our band, with no room to put the horn down. With the stand, I just don't lower it at all until intermission. Of course, it's band music, so I usually don't have to hold it without playing for very long.

As to the energy conservation approach of "weightlifter," I think that works fine in orchestra situations. For the Holton on a stand (which therefore requires little effort to hold it upright and which won't make your leg go to sleep), even in an orchestra playing Dvorak's 9th I might wait until the end of the concert.
