Any of the citric based degreasers will take the lacquer off pretty quickly. Tried diesel fuel? Just don't put it in a styrofoam container - it'll melt it. I've had the best luck with the diesel fuel for quick fixes. Immersion in a vapor degreaser will, usually, remove old gunk but not everybody has one of those.
